All of the coffee that Weigelt sells is estate, meaning it comes only from the land he farms.  He and his Japanese wife, Kanae, also operate a small up-scale bed and breakfast (www.konaedge.com).

Besides being served 100% pure Kona coffee at breakfast, guests are served farm grown organic tropical fruits.  Interested guests are treated to a complementary tour of of the farm, made all the more interesting because of Dr. Weigelt’s extensive knowledge of Hawaiian plants and their uses, past and present.

Dr. Weigelt’s approach to marketing is also somewhat unique.  He doesn’t advertise his coffee–most of his customers are former B&B guests, and he packages the product in very simple but effective bags.

Weigelt calls his approach “wholetail”, meaning the amount sold and the price he sells for is somewhere between wholesale and retail.  His goal is to keep the cost of his coffee as low as possible (without affecting quality).

Approximately 30 percent of the profit from their coffee farming goes to support their efforts with the Hawaii International HOPE Foundation (www.hihf.org) , a small humanitarian NGO set up to assist disadvantaged youth.

The Kona Coffee Farm / Bed & Breakfast is open from 8 to 5 daily. Call for information and directions.

Ahhh-loha from Lyman Kona Coffee Farms: 100% and Organic

Because much of any high quality product’s integrity rests with your trust in the producer, please allow me to introduce us to you.

I am Hans Eckert, retired from teaching college and, before Hawaii, have lived in Los Angeles County for the last 30 years (via Berlin, Germany). Nearly every year since 1981, I spent time on the Big Island, wishing I could live there. Before we bought the 8 acres of unimproved jungle in 2003, I spent 18 months studying Kona coffee through interviews, workshops, internships, and educational opportunities offered by the U. of Hawaii and the Kona Coffee Council. My wife Marsha and I started our farm “from scratch”, so that we could take the greatest advantage of laying it out for optimal efficiency and productivity. My passion is to produce consistently one of the finest coffees within the Kona Coffee Belt. I place far greater value on highest quality rather than highest yield. I really need to feel good about my product - and I do.

We named Lyman Kona Coffee Farms after David and Sarah Lyman, who came to this island in 1832 as missionaries from Boston. They founded and operated a school for 60 years (where they taught in Hawaiian) and built the first wood-frame house on the Big Island (as the oldest wooden structure on the island, it’s now part of the “Lyman Museum” in Hilo). David and Sarah are my daughter Karen’s sixth generation grandparents (she is 4, and is definitely our “manager” ). Marsha’s Great-Grandfather was born in the crib that is displayed in the Museum.

There are about 750 Kona Coffee farms, and most just sell their coffee cherry to one of the large processors. We are one of only 40 or so “Certified Coffee Estates” (by both Kona Coffee Council and by Kona Coffee Farmers Association). This means Single Origin Coffee, and that one operator ( me, we have no employees) controls the quality of all phases of production: we go “from seed to cup”. All Kona Coffee must by law be 100% Coffea Arabica species. We

have 3200 “Kona Typica” variety trees on our 5 1⁄2 acre coffee orchard, which we planted in April of 2004. Our 8 acre farm (and BnB Inn) are located at 2100 feet elevation in North Kona . We have two separate irrigation systems so that we may deliver water to our trees when they need it, regardless of rainfall.

Our farm and garden (we also have 60 varieties of tropical fruit) has always been totally free of poisons, pesticides and herbicides. We are employing only 100% Organic Practices in all of our operations. We use very strict quality control: We pick only fully red cherry, by hand ( I pay pickers extra to go slow: only the ones that look like tomatoes you want to eat the same day). Our coffee cherry gets processed within hours after picking - in our own wet mill; we float all cherry, and skim off all ‘floaters” for compost; we do not “re-run” cherry that gets kicked out from our custom wet-mill (pulper); after mechanical demucilaging, we still put our beans in a fermentation tank, and we skim off all floaters again. We sun- dry our coffee on our own 1600 square foot deck and rake it frequently. Whereas most processors produce a pound of roasted coffee from about 6 to 6 1⁄2 lbs of coffee cherry, here at Lyman Farms we need about 8 lbs, because we winnow out our selection at every step to improve the final result.

Once our parchment coffee is at 20% humidity, we pile it up over night and cover it — to avoid re- hydration (we “put our coffee to bed”). At 11.5%, we bag our coffee and store it in our own climate controlled (A/C and dehumidifier) storage facility. We Dry-mill our coffee during our presence at an organically certified dry mill. Coffee stays for State Certification in sealed bags. We pick it up as soon as we have the paperwork and store our green coffee with our parchment. OUR GREEN COFFEE IS NEVER OLDER THAN THREE MONTHS, our parchment less than a year. Our average yield per Season (August- July) is over 30 thousand lbs. We roast all coffee ourselves - to order, usually twice a week. We won the Silver Medal of KCC People’s Choice last year the Hawaii Coffee Association Excellence Award in a statewide cupping this year, our label won the Gevalia sponsors award in ‘09, and we were honored with the “Collaborator of the Year 2008″ Award by the Soils & Water Conservation folks.

Comments: We have a 7 acre family farm, every tree being tended from sprouting to pruning by the two of us.  Our farm is on the side of Hualalai and overlooks Keauhou Bay with afternoon cloud cover and warm breezes throughout the day.  We keep bee hives to increase the production of highly sought after peaberry beans which are left in our coffee, not sorted out for separate sale.  Our chickens and turkeys are used for bug patrol and fertilization.  We took this formerly neglected farm and have worked hard to get it into production again.  It is truly a labor of love.

Paul spent his career in the pharaaceutical field and is now happily a full time farmer.  Debbie is in year number 33 as an airline captain and flies the freshly roasted coffee from Kona to SFO several times each week.  Our coffee is sold via our website and at SF Bay Area farmer’s markets and gourmet food shows.

We sell only 100% Kona, never blended, and all from our 7 acre estate.  Kona coffee is much like a good California wine — the taste of the land infuses our coffee with subtle differences from other Kona farms.  We rarely have a one-time customer, repeat buyers keep us busy planting more trees to keep up with the demand for our hand processed product.

Although we are a small operation, we are sometimes able to arrange a private tour as our workload allows.  The way to contact us is via email, mokulelefarms@yahoo.com.

Comments: Our farm is 6.5 acres located in Captain Cook, on Napoopoo Road, mauka side, about two miles down from Mamalahoa highway. We have owned the farm since 1986, but we leased it out for twenty years. The farm was managed by several local farmers, and was certified organic in 1992.

In 2007, my wife Lynda and I took over working the farm. We enjoyed all aspects of coffee farming, especially the locale, and the exercise (we do most of the labor).

We have three acres of coffee, with 1800 trees in various stages of growth and productivity. Almost half of the orchard has had to be replanted.

We are again in process of organic certification with the Hawaiian Organic Farmers Association (HOFA). We practice prescribed methods of biosustainability. We obtain part of our fertilization from the mulching of sunn hemp which we plant in the wide rows between our trees, and cut and mulch on site.

The elevation of our farm is about 900 ft, and so we are at the low end of precipitation in the Kona coffee growing region. We utilize drip irrigation with individual tree loops to supply the needed water with maximum efficiency.

We process the cherry and dry and store the parchment next door at Kahula Farms, by Chris White. Dry milling and gravity table cleaning is done at Aloha Hills Coffee Company, by Jimmy Hall. Roasting is done by Brian and Amy and Bob Nelson at Lehuula Farms. Lynda and I do the packaging, distribution, and marketing of our registered brand, CUP O’KONA

We sell online at www.cupokona.com, and our coffee is featured in select gourmet retail outlets in California.
