Kau Coffee - Hawaii Coffee Growing Regions

by dan on April 11, 2010

Coffee cultivation in Kau, focused particularly in Pahala, began in 1996 with the demise of Hawaii’s sugar industry. To jumpstart the Kau coffee industry two coffee growers cooperatives were established.

Today about 330 acres are farmed by cooperative members in Cloudrest in Moaula which sits at an elevation of about 2,300 feet above sea level. About 400,000 pounds of green (unroasted) coffee are produced annually netting about $2 million.

Coop coffee production comprises about 90% of Kau’s total coffee output. Some of the other 10% is grown in Kau’s Wood Valley. Most Kau coffee farms are only about 5 acres in size.

Kau coffee is distinguished for its smooth taste with a distinct aroma and a pleasant floral bouquet. Kau coffee is sold online as well as in farmer’s markets and local retail stores.
